Lesson 4 of 8
Lighting Your Scene
Master three-point lighting, hard vs soft light, colour temperature and how to light on a zero budget.
Learn it
Three-point lighting uses a key light (main), a fill light (softens shadows) and a back light (separates the subject from the background).
Soft light from a big, close source flatters faces. Hard light from a small, far source makes sharp, dramatic shadows.
Light has colour: daylight is bluish (~5600K), indoor bulbs are orange (~3200K). Mixing them without thinking makes skin look wrong.
Key terms
- Key Light
- The main, brightest light shaping the subject.
- Fill Light
- A softer light opposite the key that reduces shadow depth.
- Back Light
- A light behind the subject creating a bright edge to separate them from the background.
- Colour Temperature
- How warm or cool a light source is, measured in Kelvin (3200K warm, 5600K daylight).
- Diffusion
- Material placed in front of a light to spread and soften it.
Building Three-Point Lighting
Set up an interview look in four steps, using anything you own.
- 1Step 1 — Key: Put the subject at 45° to a window, or a lamp with a bedsheet diffuser.
- 2Step 2 — Fill: Hold white card on the shadow side to bounce light back and soften the shadows.
- 3Step 3 — Back: Place a small lamp or phone torch behind and above, out of frame, aimed at the shoulders.
- 4Step 4 — Background: Add colour behind with a cheap RGB bulb or coloured gel so the frame has depth.
- 5Check: Look for one clean catchlight in the eyes and no blown-out highlights on the forehead.
Calculating a lighting ratio (pseudocode)
pythonkey_brightness = 800 # lux on the lit side of the face
fill_brightness = 200 # lux on the shadow side
ratio = key_brightness / fill_brightness
print("Lighting ratio =", ratio, ": 1")
if ratio <= 2:
print("High-key: bright, friendly, comedy or advert")
elif ratio <= 4:
print("Standard drama look")
else:
print("Low-key: moody thriller or horror")Contrast ratio is just key divided by fill. Change the fill distance and the whole mood of the scene changes.
Try it
Match each light to the job it does in a three-point setup.
Challenge
Design a low-key horror lighting setup for a character sitting at a desk, using only household items. Say where each source goes, how you soften or harden it, and what the lighting ratio should roughly be.
Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.

Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed
- Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
Each clue costs 4 XP (never below 17 XP). You'd earn 33 XP right now.
