Videography & Filmmaking

Lesson 7 of 8

Editing & Post-Production

Cut for rhythm, use transitions with purpose, colour grade, and export a film people will actually watch.

Learn it

Editing is where the film is really made. You choose what the audience sees and for how long.

Most cuts should be invisible — cut on movement or on a reaction, not randomly.

Colour correction fixes exposure and white balance; colour grading adds a look or mood on top.

Key terms

Rough Cut
The first assembly of selected shots in story order.
J-Cut / L-Cut
Edits where audio starts before, or continues after, the picture change.
Colour Correction
Fixing exposure, contrast and white balance so footage looks natural.
Colour Grading
Applying a creative colour look to set mood.
Bitrate
How much data per second the exported video uses; affects quality and file size.

The Edit Pipeline

How a 2-minute film goes from 40 minutes of rushes to a finished export.

  1. 1Ingest & log: Copy footage to two drives, rename clips, mark the best takes.
  2. 2Rough cut: Assemble the story with straight cuts only — no effects yet.
  3. 3Fine cut: Trim frames, add J- and L-cuts, tighten the pace.
  4. 4Sound mix: Balance dialogue, add effects and music underneath.
  5. 5Colour: Correct first so shots match, then grade for mood.
  6. 6Export: MP4 / H.264, same frame rate, sensible bitrate — then watch it all the way through once.

Estimating export size (pseudocode)

pythonduration_s = 120
bitrate_mbps = 15          # 1080p H.264
audio_mbps = 0.256

total_mb = (bitrate_mbps + audio_mbps) * duration_s / 8
print(round(total_mb, 1), "MB")

# 4K at 45 Mbps for the same film
print(round((45 + 0.256) * duration_s / 8, 1), "MB")

File size ≈ bitrate x duration / 8. This is why a 4K short film fills a memory card so fast.

Try it

Predict the output of this export-size estimator.

pythonduration_s = 60
video_mbps = 16
audio_mbps = 0

size_mb = (video_mbps + audio_mbps) * duration_s / 8
print(int(size_mb))

Challenge

You have 40 minutes of rushes for a 2-minute film. Describe your edit plan in order, and explain one place you would use a J-cut and one place a match cut would strengthen the story.

Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.

Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed

  1. Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  2. Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  3. Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  4. Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  5. Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.

Each clue costs 4 XP (never below 17 XP). You'd earn 33 XP right now.

Extension: Explain why colour correction must happen before colour grading, and what goes wrong if you reverse them.
