Lesson 2 of 7
Hardware vs Software
Understand the difference between the physical components you can touch and the digital code that runs on them.
Learn it
Imagine a music player. The plastic casing, the headphones, the battery, and the screen are things you can hold in your hands. That is hardware!
The songs stored inside, the app you swipe through, and the playlist code are things you cannot physically touch. That is software!
Hardware and software need each other to work. Without software, your computer is just an expensive paperweight. Without hardware, your software has nowhere to run.
Key terms
- Hardware
- The physical, touchable components of a computer system, such as chips, boards, cables, and displays.
- Software
- The programs, data, and instructions that tell computer hardware what to do.
- Operating System
- Core system software that manages hardware resources and provides common services for application programs.
- Device Driver
- A specialised program that allows the operating system to communicate with a specific piece of hardware.
Layers of a Computer System
When you use a computer, you interact through several distinct layers of software and hardware.
- 11. User: You interact with user-friendly interfaces such as buttons, icons, and text fields.
- 22. Application Software: Your web browser, game, or text editor converts your actions into functional software commands.
- 33. Operating System: The OS (e.g. Windows, macOS, Linux) schedules tasks, allocates memory, and coordinates with device drivers.
- 44. Hardware: The CPU, GPU, and RAM execute machine instructions and switch millions of electrical transistors.
Inspecting System Hardware with Python
pythonimport platform
import os
# Inspecting the software layer (Operating System)
print('Operating System:', platform.system())
print('OS Release:', platform.release())
# Inspecting the hardware layer (Processor architecture)
print('Processor Type:', platform.processor())
print('CPU Cores Available:', os.cpu_count())Software can query the underlying hardware! This Python script uses system libraries to inspect both the software environment and the physical CPU cores.
Try it
Match each item to its correct category.
Challenge
Explain what would happen if a computer had an Operating System installed but lacked a device driver for its network card.
Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.
Write at least 40 more characters to submit.

Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed
- Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
Each clue costs 3 XP (never below 14 XP). You'd earn 28 XP right now.
Extension: Research what firmware is and explain how it differs from regular application software.
