Learn it

In the 1970s and 1980s, video games left university labs and burst onto high streets. Brightly decorated wooden cabinets filled with flashing screens appeared in dedicated amusement arcades, bowling alleys, and pizza shops.

Players inserted 10p coins to test their reflexes on hit games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Pac-Man. These games were designed to be easy to learn but hard to master, keeping players inserting coin after coin to chase the top high score.

The arcade boom turned video games into a massive global industry and introduced iconic characters that we still celebrate today.

Key terms

Arcade Cabinet
A standalone wooden housing containing a CRT monitor, game electronics, coin slot, and control panel.
Sprite
A two-dimensional graphic or animation bitmap integrated into a larger video game scene.
High Score Table
A leaderboard that records the initials and top points scored by the best players on a cabinet.
Coin-Op
Short for coin-operated, describing machines that require currency tokens to start a timed play session.

Anatomy of an Arcade Cabinet

Let us examine the engineering inside a classic 1980s arcade machine.

  1. 1Coin Mechanism: A mechanical validator checks the weight and diameter of the coin before sending an electric pulse to the board.
  2. 2Motherboard & ROMs: The central processor reads game instructions permanently burned into Read-Only Memory chips.
  3. 3CRT Monitor: A heavy cathode-ray monitor draws raster scan lines to illuminate colourful 8-bit sprites.
  4. 4Microswitches: Heavy-duty joysticks and buttons click physical microswitches to transmit instant digital inputs.

High Score Checker

pythonhigh_scores = [('AAA', 12000), ('BOB', 9500), ('CAT', 8000)]
player_score = 10500
player_tag = 'DAN'

high_scores.append((player_tag, player_score))
high_scores.sort(key=lambda entry: entry[1], reverse=True)
print('Leaderboard Top 3:')
for rank, (name, score) in enumerate(high_scores[:3], start=1):
    print(f'{rank}. {name} - {score} pts')

Arcade games maintained a sorted list of scores in memory, updating the leaderboard whenever a player achieved a high score.
