Lesson 7 of 8
Modern Gaming
Explore the rise of indie games, mobile gaming, powerful game engines, and massive open worlds.
Learn it
Today, gaming is bigger than the movie and music industries combined! You can play breathtaking games on your phone on the bus, on home consoles, or on high-powered PC gaming rigs.
You do not need a team of a thousand people to make a hit game anymore. Small independent (indie) developers have created world-famous masterpieces like Minecraft, Undertale, and Hollow Knight.
Massive modern open-world games let you explore realistic digital continents filled with weather systems, artificial intelligence, and thousands of interactive objects.
Key terms
- Game Engine
- A software framework (like Unity or Unreal Engine) providing rendering, physics, sound, and scripting tools.
- Indie Game
- A video game created by individuals or small independent teams without direct funding from large publishers.
- Digital Distribution
- Delivering video games digitally over the internet without physical discs or retail packaging.
- Cross-Play
- The ability for players on different gaming hardware (e.g., PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) to play together in the same match.
The Architecture of a Modern Game Engine
Explore the major subsystems running inside a modern game engine like Unreal or Unity.
- 1Rendering Pipeline: Computes real-time lighting, shaders, shadows, and post-processing visual effects.
- 2Physics Engine: Simulates rigid body collisions, cloth simulation, raycasts, and gravity dynamics.
- 3Audio Subsystem: Positions 3D spatial audio, dynamic music transitions, and sound effect filters in real time.
- 4Scripting & Logic: Executes gameplay rules, quest progress, and NPC artificial intelligence state machines.
Simple NPC Patrol State Machine
pythonclass NPC:
def __init__(self, name):
self.name = name
self.state = 'PATROL'
def update(self, player_distance):
if player_distance < 5:
self.state = 'CHASE'
else:
self.state = 'PATROL'
print(f'{self.name} state: {self.state}')
guard = NPC('Castle Guard')
guard.update(12)
guard.update(3)Modern game AI uses state machines and behaviour trees to decide when characters patrol, alert, or attack based on player actions.
Try it
Match each modern gaming concept to its description:
Challenge
Compare the advantages of building a game using an existing engine (like Godot or Unity) versus coding an engine from scratch.
Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.
Write at least 40 more characters to submit.
Mark your own work
Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed
- Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
Each clue costs 5 XP (never below 24 XP). You'd earn 48 XP right now.
Extension: Draft a modular architecture diagram showing how an inventory system communicates with the UI and save system.
