Lesson 1 of 5
Decomposition
Break down huge, scary problems into bite-sized, manageable chunks you can easily solve.
Learn it
Imagine trying to build an entire spaceship in one go. That feels impossible! But what if you split it into small jobs: designing the cockpit, building the boosters, and wiring the lights? That is decomposition.
Decomposition means taking a complex problem and breaking it down into smaller, simpler parts. Once you solve each small part, you put them all together to crack the big puzzle.
Software engineers do this every day when making games. They do not code a game in one huge step; they create the character movement first, then the enemies, then the scoring system!
Key terms
- Decomposition
- The process of breaking a complex problem or system into smaller, more manageable sub-tasks.
- Modular Design
- An approach that subdivides a system into smaller parts called modules, which can be independently created and modified.
- Sub-problem
- A smaller, self-contained component of a larger computational challenge.
Deconstructing a Retro Arcade Game
Let us break down the classic task of building a platformer video game into four distinct sub-problems.
- 1Player Mechanics: Identify how the player moves, jumps, collides with walls, and loses health.
- 2Level Environment: Design the tile maps, platforms, hazards, and background scrolling layers.
- 3Enemy Behaviour: Define patrol paths, detection ranges, and attack animations for foes.
- 4Game Loop and UI: Track scores, display lives on screen, handle game over conditions, and control music.
Decomposing User Registration in Python
pythondef validate_username(username):
return len(username) >= 3
def validate_password(password):
return len(password) >= 8
def register_user(username, password):
# Decomposed into distinct validation functions
if not validate_username(username):
return "Username too short!"
if not validate_password(password):
return "Password must be at least 8 characters!"
return f"User {username} registered successfully!"
print(register_user("Ada", "superSecure123"))Instead of writing one massive registration function, the task is decomposed into modular helper functions that each check a single requirement.
Try it
Place these decomposed stages of developing a weather app into the logical order of execution:
- 1Combine UI and data functions, then test with various cities.
- 2Write functions to fetch and parse weather data from an external API.
- 3Define the core features: current temperature, 5-day forecast, and location search.
- 4Design individual user interface mockups for each screen.
Challenge
Write a decomposition plan for an automated smart home security system. Identify at least three distinct sub-problems.
Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.
Write at least 40 more characters to submit.

Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed
- Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
Each clue costs 3 XP (never below 13 XP). You'd earn 25 XP right now.
Extension: Write pseudo-code functions for each decomposed component and show how a main controller function calls them.
