Lesson 3 of 7
Lesson 3 — No-Code and Low-Code Automation
Connect apps without writing code using tools like Zapier, Make, Power Automate and n8n.
Learn it
No-code tools let you build workflows by dragging blocks and filling in fields instead of writing code.
Popular tools include Zapier, Make (Integromat), Microsoft Power Automate and n8n. They connect apps like Gmail, Slack, Teams, Sheets, Forms and databases.
Each block is a trigger, action or condition. You connect blocks with lines to show the flow.
Low-code adds small scripts or expressions for custom logic, while no-code stays entirely visual.
Key terms
- No-code
- Building workflows visually without writing traditional code.
- Low-code
- Mostly visual building with small code snippets for custom logic.
- Connector
- A pre-built link between an automation tool and another app.
- Variable mapping
- Using output from one step as input to another.
- Webhook
- A URL that receives data from another app when something happens.
Build a form-to-sheet flow
A Google Form collects club sign-ups.
- 1Trigger: New form response submitted.
- 2Action 1: Add a row to a Google Sheet with name, email and chosen club.
- 3Action 2: Send a welcome email using the form email address.
- 4Action 3: Post a notification in the club leader's Slack channel.
Mapping variables in a no-code tool
textStep 1: Google Form 'New response'
Output: student_name, student_email, club_choice
Step 2: Add row to Google Sheet 'Club members'
Column A ← student_name
Column B ← student_email
Column C ← club_choice
Step 3: Send email
To ← student_email
Subject ← 'Welcome to ' + club_choice
Body ← 'Hi ' + student_name + ', thanks for signing up!'The output of step 1 becomes the input of steps 2 and 3. This is variable mapping.
Try it
Match each tool to its best description.
Challenge
Design a no-code workflow for a school event: a Microsoft Form collects ticket requests. Your flow should add each request to a SharePoint list, send a confirmation email, and post a daily count to Teams. List the tool, trigger, actions and any conditions.
Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.

Guided walkthrough — 0/3 clues revealed
- Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
- Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
Each clue costs 4 XP (never below 18 XP). You'd earn 35 XP right now.
