AI and the Future

Lesson 1 of 7

What is AI?

Discover what artificial intelligence is, how it compares to human thinking, and where we encounter it daily.

Learn it

Imagine teaching your computer to recognise your favourite video games or recommend songs you love without telling it exact rules. That is artificial intelligence, or AI for short! Instead of following a strict step-by-step recipe written by a human, an AI system looks at lots of examples and figures out patterns on its own.

Today, AI powers virtual assistants like Siri, translation tools, and the recommendation algorithms on YouTube and TikTok. It is not a magical brain, but clever computer programs running smart maths to solve specific problems.

Key terms

Artificial Intelligence
The simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems and software algorithms.
Narrow AI
AI systems specialised to perform a single defined task with high competence.
Algorithm
A finite sequence of mathematical or logical instructions used to solve a problem.
General AI (AGI)
A hypothetical AI system capable of understanding and learning any intellectual task that a human can.

Mapping AI in Everyday Life

Follow these steps to identify and analyse the AI technologies surrounding you every single day.

  1. 1Smart Assistants: Examine how voice assistants convert audio waves into text and parse language to answer your queries.
  2. 2Recommendation Feeds: Notice how video and music apps track watch time, likes, and skips to predict what you want to experience next.
  3. 3Photo Organisation: Check your smartphone photo gallery to see how it automatically groups pictures by detected faces, pets, or objects.
  4. 4Navigation and Maps: Observe how map applications compute live traffic updates and suggest the fastest routes in real time.

A Rule-Based vs AI Approach

python# Traditional rule-based approach
def recommend_music(genre):
    if genre == 'rock':
        return 'Queen'
    elif genre == 'pop':
        return 'Dua Lipa'
    return 'Unknown'

# AI approaches use pattern weights rather than rigid if-statements
user_preferences = {'tempo': 120, 'energy': 0.8, 'acoustic': 0.1}
print('Rule output:', recommend_music('rock'))

Traditional programming uses rigid if-statements. AI systems instead analyse continuous data points like tempo, acousticness, and listening duration to make dynamic predictions.

Challenge

Think of a repetitive chore in your school or home. Describe how an AI system could assist with it, detailing what inputs it needs and what output it should produce.

Pick whichever way suits you — every mode earns the same bonus XP.

Write at least 40 more characters to submit.

Guided walkthrough — 0/5 clues revealed

  1. Clue 1 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  2. Clue 2 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  3. Clue 3 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  4. Clue 4 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.
  5. Clue 5 locked — reveal it only if you get stuck.

Each clue costs 3 XP (never below 13 XP). You'd earn 25 XP right now.

Extension: Explain one potential risk or edge case where the AI might misinterpret its input and make a mistake.
